Haemoglobin carries oxygen around your body. It is the main number used to check for anaemia, and it is read with red cell size to help explain why it is low.
Haemoglobin. The iron-rich protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
Red cell count, haematocrit, MCV and MCH. Measured on the same full blood count. They show how many red cells you have and how large and well filled they are, which helps point to the cause of a low result.
Low haemoglobin means the blood carries less oxygen. It is linked with tiredness, breathlessness, a racing heart on exertion, headaches and looking pale. Common causes include low iron, heavy periods, low B12 or folate, and long-running illness. Women who menstruate, people who are pregnant, endurance athletes and regular blood donors are most likely to run low.
Red cell size helps narrow the cause. Small cells are often linked with low iron or thalassaemia trait, which is relatively common in people with family roots in the Gulf, the Mediterranean and South Asia. Large cells are more often linked with low B12 or folate. Haemoglobin can also run high. In the UAE heat, dehydration is a common reason, as is smoking.
UAE labs usually report haemoglobin in g/dL. Some use g/L, which is 10 times higher. Many ranges start at around 13 g/dL for men and 12 g/dL for women, though they vary by lab and change in pregnancy.
Low haemoglobin is a sign of anaemia. Your ferritin, iron, B12 and red cell size from the same screen help show the likely cause. Your consultant will go through it with you and suggest when to speak to your own doctor.
A high result is often linked with dehydration, smoking or poor sleep with breathing pauses at night. A level that stays high when you are well hydrated is worth following up.
Reference ranges differ between labs, and a single result is a snapshot. Your consultant reads every value against your history and the rest of the screen, not in isolation.
This test is part of Baseline’s full blood screen: 122 parameters across ten systems from one draw, for AED 850, with results in 48 hours. It is not sold as a single test, because the result means more next to everything else.
Ranges are the lab’s own. Your consultant goes through what they mean with you.
Your results arrive in the Baseline app, every marker against the lab’s own range, checked by your consultant before you see them. The values above are an example.
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. If you feel unwell, or your symptoms are new or getting worse, speak to a doctor.
Reading is not a diagnosis. A consultation goes through your history with you and tells you plainly whether a program fits, including when it does not. AED 350, credited in full against your first order.
