    What the test measures

H Pylori (Gut). A check for Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that can live in the lining of the stomach and is linked with indigestion, gastritis and stomach ulcers.

    Who should test

    H. pylori is one of the most common infections in the world. It is usually picked up in childhood and can stay in the stomach for years. Many people who carry it never notice. In others it irritates the stomach lining, which can lead to burning pain, bloating, nausea and, over time, ulcers.

There is more than one way to test for H. pylori. Labs can look for it in blood, and it can also be checked with a breath test or a stool test. The methods answer slightly different questions, for example whether you have met the bacterium at some point or whether it is active now. Your consultant will explain what the screen result can and cannot tell you, and whether a different kind of test is the right next step.

    • Burning or gnawing pain in the upper stomach
    • Indigestion or bloating that keeps coming back
    • Feeling sick or full quickly after small meals
    • A family member who has had H. pylori or a stomach ulcer
    • Low iron or ferritin without a clear cause

    How to prepare

    • Follow the fasting instructions for the full screen.
    • Tell your consultant about any medicines you take for indigestion or acid, and any medicines taken for an infection in the last month, as these can affect some H. pylori tests.
    • Mention any past H. pylori result, and when it was.

    Reading your results

    If it comes back positive

A positive result suggests you have been exposed to H. pylori, and depending on the test it may or may not mean the infection is active now. It is a reason to speak to your own doctor, who may confirm it with a breath or stool test before deciding anything.

    If it comes back negative

A negative result makes H. pylori less likely, but it does not explain stomach symptoms on its own. Ongoing pain, difficulty swallowing, weight loss or any sign of bleeding needs your own doctor, whatever the result.

Reference ranges differ between labs, and a single result is a snapshot. Your consultant reads every value against your history and the rest of the screen, not in isolation.

    How the home test works

This test is part of Baseline’s full blood screen: 122 parameters across ten systems from one draw, for AED 850, with results in 48 hours. It is not sold as a single test, because the result means more next to everything else.

    Questions

    What is H. pylori?
A bacterium that can live in the stomach lining. It is very common, often picked up in childhood, and many people who carry it have no symptoms.
Are there other ways to test for H. pylori?
Yes. Besides the lab test on the screen, H. pylori can be checked with a breath test or a stool test. Your own doctor may use one of these to confirm a result.
Can H. pylori affect my iron levels?
It can. Long-standing H. pylori is one of the recognised causes of low iron, which is why it is useful to see it next to the Iron Profile from the same draw.
Can I book an H. pylori test on its own?
No. H. pylori is part of the Gut, Stress & Allergy section of the full home screen, measured from the same single visit as everything else.
