Vitamin D test at home in Dubai

Low vitamin D is one of the most common results in the UAE, even with year-round sunshine. One blood marker tells you where you stand.

    What the test measures

Vitamin D (25-OH Total). The main circulating form of vitamin D, and the best single measure of how much your body has stored from sunlight, food and supplements.

    Who should test

Your skin makes vitamin D in direct sunlight, but life in the UAE is mostly lived indoors. Air-conditioned offices, cars, covered clothing, sunscreen and avoiding the midday heat all cut the time skin actually spends in the sun. Darker skin also makes vitamin D more slowly. That is why deficiency is common here despite the climate.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports bones, muscles and the immune system. Low levels are linked with tiredness, low mood, aching muscles and getting ill more often. The symptoms are vague, so a blood test is the only way to know. It also matters if you already take a supplement, because the right amount varies a lot from person to person.

    • Tiredness that sleep does not fix
    • Aching muscles or bones
    • Low mood, especially through the summer months indoors
    • Frequent colds or slow recovery from illness
    • Little time in direct sun, or covered clothing most of the day
    • Taking a supplement and not knowing if the dose is right

    How to prepare

    • Vitamin D itself does not need fasting, but other markers on the same draw do, so follow the fasting instructions you are given.
    • Keep taking any supplement as normal and tell your consultant the dose.
    • If you have recently changed your dose, a result is most meaningful after about three months on it.

    Reading your results

    Units: ng/mL or nmol/L

Labs report vitamin D in one of two units. To convert, multiply ng/mL by 2.5, so 30 ng/mL is 75 nmol/L. Many guidelines use 30 ng/mL as the line for sufficiency and under 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) as deficiency, though cut-offs vary by lab.

    If it comes back low

Low results are very common and often respond to changes in sun exposure, diet or supplementation. Your consultant will talk through what fits your result and how soon a recheck makes sense.

    If it comes back high

Very high levels are uncommon and usually come from high-dose supplements taken for a long time. Too much vitamin D can raise calcium in the blood, so a high result is a reason to review your intake.

Reference ranges differ between labs, and a single result is a snapshot. Your consultant reads every value against your history and the rest of the screen, not in isolation.

    How the home test works

This test is part of Baseline’s full blood screen: 122 parameters across ten systems from one draw, for AED 850, with results in 48 hours. It is not sold as a single test, because the result means more next to everything else.

    • Nurse comes to you. A licensed phlebotomist visits your home or office, 7 days a week, anywhere in the UAE.
    • Accredited lab. Samples are processed by a CAP-accredited laboratory (College of American Pathologists), also accredited to ISO 15189, against clinical reference ranges.
    • Reviewed with you. Results land in your account in Baseline format, and your consultant walks you through them on video, never a PDF dumped in your inbox.

    Questions

Why is vitamin D deficiency so common in the UAE when it is so sunny?
Because most people spend the day indoors, in the car or covered up, and avoid the sun at the hours when skin makes the most vitamin D. Sunscreen and darker skin tones reduce production further.
What is the difference between ng/mL and nmol/L?
They are two units for the same result. Multiply ng/mL by 2.5 to get nmol/L. A result of 30 ng/mL is the same as 75 nmol/L, so always check which unit your report uses before comparing numbers.
Should I stop my vitamin D supplement before the test?
No. Keep taking it as usual so the result shows your normal level, and tell your consultant what dose you take.
Can I book a vitamin D test on its own?
No. Vitamin D is one of 122 parameters in the full home screen, measured from the same single draw as everything else.
