PSA is part of the male profile in the screen. It is a useful baseline, but it is not a cancer test on its own, and most raised results have other causes.
PSA, prostate. Prostate-specific antigen, a protein made by the prostate gland. A small amount passes into the blood, and the level can rise for many reasons, most of them not cancer.
PSA is made by normal prostate tissue, so every man has some in his blood. The level tends to rise gently with age as the prostate grows. It can also go up for a while after things that press on or irritate the prostate, such as an infection, a long bike ride or ejaculation in the day or two before the test. That is why one number is never read on its own.
Prostate cancer can raise PSA too, which is why the test exists. But a raised PSA is not a diagnosis of cancer, and a normal PSA does not rule cancer out. A baseline reading is useful because a change over time often tells more than one result. Guidelines differ on when men should start checking, so it is a personal choice worth talking through.
A raised PSA is not a diagnosis of cancer. Most raised results have other causes, such as an enlarged prostate, an infection or inflammation, recent exercise or recent ejaculation. A raised result does need follow-up with your own doctor, who will often start by repeating the test. Your consultant will go through the number with you first.
A normal result is reassuring for that moment, but it does not rule cancer out. Reference ranges vary by lab and by age. If you have urinary symptoms or a strong family history, speak to your own doctor whatever the number says.
Reference ranges differ between labs, and a single result is a snapshot. Your consultant reads every value against your history and the rest of the screen, not in isolation.
This test is part of Baseline’s full blood screen: 122 parameters across ten systems from one draw, for AED 850, with results in 48 hours. It is not sold as a single test, because the result means more next to everything else.
Ranges are the lab’s own. Your consultant goes through what they mean with you.
Your results arrive in the Baseline app, every marker against the lab’s own range, checked by your consultant before you see them. The values above are an example.
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. If you feel unwell, or your symptoms are new or getting worse, speak to a doctor.
Reading is not a diagnosis. A consultation goes through your history with you and tells you plainly whether a program fits, including when it does not. AED 350, credited in full against your first order.
