Blood sugar can stay normal for years while your body works harder to keep it there. Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR show that extra effort earlier.
Fasting Insulin Level. How much insulin your body needs to keep blood sugar steady overnight. A high level can mean your cells are responding to it less well.
HOMA IR (Insulin Resistance). A score worked out from fasting insulin and fasting glucose, used as an estimate of insulin resistance.
Fasting Blood Sugar and HbA1c. Your blood sugar this morning and your average over roughly the last three months, measured on the same draw.
Insulin moves sugar from the blood into cells. When cells respond less well, the pancreas makes more insulin to compensate. For a long time that keeps glucose and HbA1c normal, so a standard check looks fine. Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR can show the strain before blood sugar starts to rise.
Insulin resistance is linked with weight gain around the middle, energy dips after meals, raised triglycerides and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes over time. It is common in the UAE, where type 2 diabetes rates are high. A family history of diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome and a mostly desk-based day all add to the reason to test.
There is no single agreed cut-off, and ranges vary by lab, but many studies treat a HOMA-IR above about 2.5 as a sign of insulin resistance. It is often responsive to changes in sleep, activity, diet and weight. Your consultant will talk through what your numbers mean together.
An HbA1c of 5.7-6.4% or a fasting glucose of 5.6-6.9 mmol/L (100-125 mg/dL) is commonly described as the prediabetes range. Higher results need follow-up with your own doctor.
Reference ranges differ between labs, and a single result is a snapshot. Your consultant reads every value against your history and the rest of the screen, not in isolation.
This test is part of Baseline’s full blood screen: 122 parameters across ten systems from one draw, for AED 850, with results in 48 hours. It is not sold as a single test, because the result means more next to everything else.
Ranges are the lab’s own. Your consultant goes through what they mean with you.
Your results arrive in the Baseline app, every marker against the lab’s own range, checked by your consultant before you see them. The values above are an example.
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. If you feel unwell, or your symptoms are new or getting worse, speak to a doctor.
Reading is not a diagnosis. A consultation goes through your history with you and tells you plainly whether a program fits, including when it does not. AED 350, credited in full against your first order.
