ALT test at home in Dubai

ALT is the most liver-specific enzyme on a standard blood test. A mildly raised result is often the first sign of a liver under strain, years before any symptom.

    What you’ll learn
What the ALT test measures and why it mattersHow to prepare, and how to read your resultsHow to get it at home anywhere in the UAE, results in 48 hours

    What the test measures

ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase). An enzyme found mainly inside liver cells, which leaks into the blood when those cells are irritated or damaged, so a higher level points to liver strain.

AST, ALP, Gamma GT and bilirubin. Measured on the same draw, these show whether a raised ALT fits a liver pattern, a bile flow pattern or a muscle pattern.

    Who should test

ALT sits mostly in the liver, so it is the enzyme most closely linked with liver cell health. The most common reason for a raised ALT today is fatty liver linked with weight, blood sugar and diet. It often turns up in people who feel well and is usually reversible when found early. Alcohol, some medicines and supplements, and viral hepatitis can raise it too.

ALT is most useful read alongside the rest of the screen. A raised ALT with high triglycerides, high fasting insulin or a raised HbA1c fits a metabolic pattern. A raised ALT with a much higher AST and CPK after a heavy gym week points more towards muscle than liver.

    • Extra weight around the middle, or raised blood sugar
    • Regular alcohol, including weekend drinking
    • Long-term medicine or several supplements
    • A previous mildly raised liver result that was never rechecked
    • Tiredness or discomfort under the right ribs

    How to prepare

    • Follow the fasting instructions for the full screen: an overnight fast with water only.
    • Avoid alcohol for at least 24-48 hours beforehand.
    • Skip very hard or new types of training for 48 hours, since muscle strain can nudge ALT up as well as AST.
    • Keep a list of medicines and supplements to share at your review.

    Reading your results

    Units and ranges

UAE labs report ALT in units per litre (U/L). Upper limits often sit somewhere between the 30s and the 50s U/L and are usually lower for women, but reference ranges vary by lab, so your result is read against the lab's own range.

    If it comes back high

A mild rise is common and is most often linked with fatty liver, alcohol, some medicines or recent hard exercise. It is usually rechecked after a few weeks of changes. A large rise, or one with other abnormal liver results, needs prompt follow-up with your own doctor.

    If it comes back low

A low ALT is rarely a concern on its own. Very low values are sometimes seen with low muscle mass or low vitamin B6, and they are read alongside the rest of your results.

Reference ranges differ between labs, and a single result is a snapshot. Your consultant reads every value against your history and the rest of the screen, not in isolation.

    How the home test works

This test is part of Baseline’s full blood screen: 122 parameters across ten systems from one draw, for AED 850, with results in 48 hours. It is not sold as a single test, because the result means more next to everything else.

    • Nurse comes to you. A licensed phlebotomist visits your home or office, 7 days a week, anywhere in the UAE.
    • Accredited lab. Samples are processed by a CAP-accredited laboratory (College of American Pathologists), also accredited to ISO 15189, against clinical reference ranges.
    • Reviewed with you. Results land in your account in Baseline format, and your consultant walks you through them on video, never a PDF dumped in your inbox.

    Questions

What is a normal ALT level?
It depends on the lab and on your sex. Many labs put the upper limit somewhere between 30 and 55 U/L, often lower for women. Reference ranges vary by lab, so always compare your result with the range printed on your report.
Can a raised ALT go back to normal?
Often, yes. When ALT is raised because of fatty liver or alcohol, it commonly improves with weight loss, less alcohol, better blood sugar control and more activity. A recheck after about 3 months shows whether changes are working.
Can the gym raise my ALT?
It can. Very heavy or unfamiliar training can raise ALT slightly for a few days. AST and CPK usually rise much more in that case, which helps tell the two apart.
Can I book an ALT test on its own?
No. ALT is one of 122 parameters in the full home screen, measured from the same single draw as every other marker.
